    One of the most important aspects of my favourite social networking sites is that I can find out what my friends are reading. I shamelessly spy people on LibraryThing and Facebook and though I don't often get so far as to publish my results, I always enthusiastically do all the book memes I can find. I did the BBC hundred books meme on Facebook, and like so many others found the list somewhat strange. Thus I tried to track down the lists origin, hundreds of people have done the meme but none had a link where BBC "says" these are the books you ougth to read.

    And as far as I can determine, they never did. BBC has still the list from their Big Read project, where the audiences nominated 100 best loved books from 2003 here but it is a different list and does not represent books you ought to read but books the Brits love. What I did eventually find, and which seems to match with the list used in the meme was this, which obviously did not originate from BBC and does not represent anything else except the favourite novels of about 2000 readers who answered a a poll on the net. This would explain why some things appear on the list twice. Also, if anyone has stronger google-fu than I and can track down this "on average six books" quote I'd be interested.

    This took me about ten minutes, and I am not the only one on teh interents who has tried to track the list down. Now through Scifimarkkinat I learn that Ilta-sanomat thought this is a cool meme – and it is! – and made their own list referencing the meme, parroting the beginning of the meme without a link. And these people actually go to school to learn journalism? Verifying and crediting you sources, anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

    As for the meme itself, off the "BBC" list I have read 68, and was pretty certain I would do really badly on IS list, what whit my well documented aversion towards Finnish language literature, but lo and behold results are not abysmal!

    Grand total of 34. The difference to the "BBC" -list is that here are more authors I have never heard of (Marja-Liisa Vartio? Riikka Pulkkinen? Olli Jalonen?), more books I have tried and given up as unreadable or plain boring (Pohjanmaa, Nuorena nukkunut, Maa on syntinen laulu, Putkinotko, Punainen viiva), and many, many more books that just don't sound interesting enough for me to make room in my life for them.

    Eli: Kuvassa olen minä. Kyseessä on näköispatsas, joka tehtiin Finncon 2006:ssa olleeseen fysiikka-demoon, jossa minun oli tarkoitus räjähtää loisteliaasti paineen ansiosta. Pahainen sunnuntaikappale meni ja tietenkin räjähti, mutta se huomattavasti realistisempi, kovakalloinen jukkahoo EI! Turhautuneet tiedemiehet luovuttivat ja antoivat kyseisen testikappaleen minulle. Se seisoo tällä hetkellä ylväästi kirjahyllyjämme suojelleen hyllyllä, jossa on lähinnä Lois McMaster Bujoldin kirjoja. 

    Lingua Franca: This is Mini-Me. It is a miniature statue, that was used at a physics demo at Finncon 2006, where it was supposed to explode in pressure chamber. HA! Little do they know of the AWESOMENESS of my miniature-jukkahoo's! I don't need a hardhat, I AM one! Nowadays the statue holds the fort in our living room and keeps the booksies at bay when we're not around. Location-wise he can be found in front of the Bujold's. A rowdy buch of books, if I've ever seen any.

    When I have been home I have been reading essays, and thus
    not blogging about my birthday present, but today thre is a nice two hour break
    between dance and men, and the arena has WiFi for reasonable price, so here
    goes:

    Dance is m favourite discipline, even though I do think that
    COP is really problematic for this particular branch of figure skating. I
    honestly don’t think spins and shadow skating are what dance should be about.
    Anyway. The compulsary dance, as all people who read papers in Finland know was
    Finnstep, a quickstep based on Rahkamo/Kokko rythm dance from 1995. As it is
    completely new dance, and most of the couples only started rehearsing it after
    the draw was made, it really separated couples. Bad were really, really bad and
    even the good were rough around the edges. It is an interesting and really
    difficult dance, it demands both smooth edges and bouncy expression. I thought
    the best were Khohlova/Novitski, they were excellent especially on the first
    half of the dance. My other favourite here was Carron/Jost who scated a smooth,
    bouncy dance and held the rythm better than any other team. I was a bit miffed not to see them
    higher.

    Today was original dance, the prescribed rythms being
    ballroom from 1920s to 1940s. This meant at least three sing sing sings, Bei Mir
    ist du Schöns and Minnie the Moochers. You’d think there are more foxtrots,
    swings, lindys and blues in the world…

    My favourites continue to be the Kerrs. They had great expression and as they are the crowd favourites, their energy fed back to their performance.
    It has to be noted that boy Kerr made few mistakes, and I thus was a bit
    surprised that they remained ahead of Pechalat/Bourzat who had a nice and
    smooth though unmemorable OD. An other team the really wows me are Carron/Jost.
    I loved their OD last year I think their technique has improved leaps and
    bounds. Among the disapointments were Kholova/Novitski. I reall don't think that lime green tulle is really the way to go dresswise, and the dance itself seemed competent but pretty forgettable. I was not
    terrbly taken with Capellini/Lanotte either. Smooth, technially good and
    increadibly boring.

    No changes in the top half of the leader board, and some of
    the changs lower down are caused by Domnina/Shabalin withdrawing.
    Hoffman/Zavozin cambe down because Max stumbled, which is a bummer, it was a
    good dance. Lithuanians stormed up from 15th to 8th with a nice dance, I
    especially liked the entries to their lifts.

    Next up, dinner and Men’s Free Skate.

    Hyvää uutta vuotta ja kiitoksia osanotosta. Myy oli mainio
    pikkukoira ja vaikka vieläkin välillä kirpaisee niin tottua tähän pitää. Jos koiranomistaja
    ei pysty tekemään lopettamispäätöstä tarvittaessa, ei pitäisi ottaa koiraa.
    Muuten joulunaika on ollut karsean kiireistä, käsitys omasta tuotteliaisuudesta
    ja aktiivisuudesta osoittautui taas yliarvioiduksi ja vieläkin tahkoan rästiin
    jääneitä töitä alta pois. Jotta edes vähäksi aikaa saisin pääni menneisyyden tomusta nykyaikaan, koin välttämättömäksi japertaa pitkään ja hartaasti asiasta joka on pohdituttanut minua jo jonkin aikaa, eli nettikeskustelusta.

    Kosmarin foorumeilla ja sen innoittamana Usvan blogissa on ollut pohdintaa verkon keskustelupalstojen passiivisuudesta,  ja yritystä herätellä foorumeita eloon. Idea on varsin noobeli ja periaatteessa
    kannatettava, kukapa netissä roikkuva ei mielellään näkisi pitkiä säkenöiviä
    argumentteja sisältäviä keskusteluja asioista jotka itseään kiinnostavat. Omana
    hypoteesina esittäisin kuitenkin että keskustelupalstat eivät paradoksaalisesti
    ole ollenkaan parhaita paikkoja keskustelun ylläpitämiseksi.

     Meillä spefipiireissä on pariinkiin otteeseen yritety luoda
    alustoja joilla keskustella fandomiin, spefiin ja spefikirjoittamiseen
    liittyvistä kysymyksistä, aika huonolla menestyksellä: ihmisten aktiivisuus on
    jäänyt kovin alhaiseksi. Babek Nabel herää henkiin kerran vuodessa
    päivittelemään Finnconin tilaa, muuten siellä on kovin hiljaista ja samat
    naamat postailevat lähinnä uutistyyppistä matskua. Kosmarin foorumi näyttäisi
    olevaan sekään sen aktiivisempi. Eli sellaiset paikat jotka on suunniteltu
    fandomilta fandomille eivät vedä keskustelua. Tämä ei ole pelkästään
    genrefoorumeiden ongelma. Kuten on tullut muualla todettua Kiiltomato sulki
    keskustelupalstansa kun se oli kitunut muutaman kirjoittajan vetämänä pidemmän
    aikaa. Hesarin lukupiiri (blogimuotoinen, tosin) on ihan kivaa luettavaa mutta
    sielläkin aktiivisten nimimerkkien määrä on pieni – asia josta Minna Lindgren vähän
    epäreilusti kirjoitti ihan pakinankin.

    Spefipuolella menestyneempiä ovat olleet sellaiset paikat
    kuin Konnun Vihreä Lohikäärme ja Raisari jotka ovat luoneet omat yhteisönsä ja joiden kautta spefifandom yleisemmin on saanut iloista ja innokasta väenlisäystä.
    Keskustelu on näissä yhteisöissä selkeästi vilkkaampaa mutta koska ikärakenne on selkeästi
    teinipainotteinen, ei ainakaan tämä vanha spefijäärä viitsi mennä punatähtien
    kanssa tai ilman Stephanie Meyer threadiin pilaamaan Edwardia ihquttavian
    12-kesäisten iloa toteamalla että mitään niin paskaa kuin Meyer ei ole kyllä
    pitkään aikaan julkaistu, ellei nyt sitten Paolinin Eragon, varsinkin kun en varmaan osaisi olla niin kohtelias kuin Sini… Siellä on ihan kiva
    lurkkailla ja jakaa tietoa mutta kovin erilaisilla keskusteluvalmiuksilla ja
    tarpeilla siellä ollaan monesti liikkeellä.Todeta toki täytyy että Raisarin tietokannat ja uutispalvelu on ainakin minulle mannaa taivaasta.

    Ratkaisuna tähän monilla keskustelupalstoilla on luotu ”vakavaan”
    keskusteluun tarkoitettu erillinen foorumi, esimerkkeinä vaikka Anikin Arkadia
    tai vaikka lätkäfanien Jatkoajassa kokeiltu analyysifoorumi suljettu osasto joka kuihtui pois. Yleensä nämä foorumit todella kuolevat tai kitkuttavat
    spefifoorumeiden tapaan muutaman aktiivin voimin. Seurauksena usein on paitsi
    keskustelupalstan hiljaisuus niin varsin nopeasti sisäänlämpiävyys. Ne viisi
    nimimerkkiä alkavat tuntea toisensa niin hyvin että postauskynnys
    ulkopuolisella saattaa nousta kovin korkeaksi.

    Josta pääsemme sitten lempihypoteesiini. Jos oikeasti haluaa
    keskustella verkossa analyyttisemmin kuin -”Stephenson rulettaa!” –”Näin on
    Anathem oli loistava!!!” paras alusta siihen on blogi. Tämä blogi on minun
    tilani, olen panostanut siihen aikaa ja rahaa. Minä moderoin sitä niin kuin
    tahdon (Jukka voi vikistä jotain, mutta kuka sitä kuuntelee…). Jos joku tulee
    trollaamaan tai muuten vaan yrittää ärhäkästi dominoida keskustelua
    kommenteissani, minä voin bannata ip:n ihan milloin haluan. Hypoteettinen
    trollini puolestaan voi vapaasti kirjoittaa omaan blogiinsa tulikivenkatkuisen
    saarnan siitä kuinka se Polvinen estää sananvapauden toteutumista. Trackbackeistä
    näkee missä muissa blogeissa kirjoitusta on kommentoitu ja klikkaamalla sinne
    taas pääsee lukemaan kommentaattorin lukijoiden näkemyksiä asiasta. Joku saattaa
    eksyä tännekin keskustelemaan, ja käynhän minäkin aina välissä kommentoimassa
    muiden tuikituntemattomien tekemisiä.

    Suurin ongelma minusta on käsitteellinen. Meidän on vielä
    jotenkin hankala hahmottaa hypertekstien maailmaa ja nähdä blogosfääriä
    yhtenäisenä verkkona erillisten saarien sijaan. Haluamme että kaikki on yhdessä
    paikassa sen sijaan että klikkailisimme keskustelun perässä ympäri nettiä niin kuin
    monesti muualla ja nuorempien sormien voimin jo tehdään.

    Jos halutaan aktivoida kirjallisuuskeskustelua, foorumeja
    hyödyllisempi palvelu minusta olisi spefistien oma newsletter-palvelu, eli se
    että joku/jotkut troolaisivat läpi blogeja ja kerran viikossa/kuukaudessa
    keräisivät yhteen (varta vasten perustettuun blogiin/lj:hin)  aihetta käsitteleviä kiinnostavia kirjoituksia
    netistä. Uutiskirjeblogin kommentit voisivat myös toimia keskustelupalstana jos
    halutaan keskitetympää keskustelua. Esimerkkinä tällaisista blogeista tai
    livejournaleista ovat mm. sarjakuvamaailman When Fangirls Attack ja
    mediafandomin Metafandom. Jos Suomen fandomista löytyisi kaksitoista ihmistä
    tätä hommaa tekemään, yksi vuoden jokaiselle kukaudelle ei taakkakaan olisi
    mitenkään mahdoton. Siinä minun kaksi senttiäni. Helpotti.

  • R.I.P. Myy

    I went out with Myy at 3PM. She looked OK, old and frail, as she had now for some time now. After all, she was 15 and a half. I started making dinner around 5.30. I noticed she was laying on the kitchen carpet, which she never does. Next thing I notice, Myy is standing next to me, barely standing up. Her legs are giving up and she looks so sad.

    Sari takes her to the sofa. She is bleeding. We drive her to the Pieneläinklinikka, where a nurse makes a routine check. She calls a vet, who examines Myy more thoroughly.

    There is only one possible choice.

    We miss you horribly.

    was standing at the top of the slope, shouting with joy and admiration.
    She had broken a barrel and fastened two of the staves under her boots.

    “Here I come,” she cried. Without a moment’s hesitation Little My
    set out, straight down the hill. Moomintroll looked up with one eye and
    saw that she would manage it. Her ferocious little face bore the mark
    of happy confidence and her legs were stiff as pegs.

    Suddenly Moomintroll felt very proud. Little My
    never shied; she hurtled at breakneck speed close to a pine-bole,
    wobbled, caught her balance again, and with a roar of laughter threw
    herself down in the snow beside Moomintroll.

    “She’s one of my oldest friends,” he explained to the Fillyjonk.

  • Tidings of Yule and All That!

    "It's Xmas time, there no need to feel afraid" they sang a while back then. There is no need to be afraid again, as The Turku of Finland has declared Xmas Peace! They've done since the Middle Ages. Not in order to stop wars, apparently, but to give peace to women, markets, and especially domestic life.

    We're also declaring Yule Peace! It covers all people and majority of domestic animals (especially dogs), but excludes ham and casseroles. And salmon. And various herrings and patés. And the usual accoutrements. You know. Edibles.

  • Botheration

    I have a tendency to celebrate my birthday every year. I'm sure this is not uncommon with people, but I think less than most try to organise a party every year. As long as I can remember with at least some clarity, I've invited people to my place that day. More often than not, that day has been the 20th of December, mostly because I was born that day (hence, the birthday).

    Last year was a disappointing failure, due to me having a serious case of eartube infection, which to my personal experience ranks high up there as Things That Are Seriously Hurting Me -scale. I mean, "Ouch!". More so the pity, as last year I would've turned 40. And did, of course, just not with friends and all that.

    So, imagine my dismay when people at workplace started getting sick with strange case of flu. And while some understand that staying at home and treating the sickness is the best alternative, some were less savvy and decided to come to work, none the less. And then more got sick, and then… I got sick. Yesterday I felt like I might be getting IT and today at work I knew I should leave right away. Yet I didn't, you see, there were still few among our crew, that weren't sick already. More the merrier and all that.

    Now, it looks highly likely that I'm going to skip this year as well. The 20th is just around the corner, this Saturday (Saturday!!! How often do you get Saturdays?) in fact. Bummer, to say the least.

    So, maybe not. Damn.

    Marttigolf No I am not mispelling the name of the engine…

    Martti returned home from his tour today. In Sweden he won open class and was fourth best dog in his breed. Today he was even more successful: at Voittaja 2008 show at Messukeskus he was Best of Breed and thus got the title V-08 to add to his FI MVA title. I think he now has more titles than I do, definitely he has more trophies…

    We have been celebrating with chocolate for people and dentasticks for Martti. He also had his fifth birthday while on the road, so that had to be celebrated also.

    Now he has time to rest on his laurels and enjoy life, there is nothing on his schedule before his eye exam sometime in the spring: heelers are prone to a nasty genetic eye disease called lens luxation and regular eye checks are recommended for all but especially for breeding dogs. 

    So now we are just going to enjoy long walks on the Tali golf course and try to learn new tricks, maybe even take in an obedience training course.

    São Paulo FC has just won the Campeonato Brasileiro. It's their sixth in all (hence the hexa) and incredible third in a row. They now have the most Championships in the history of Brasilian football.

    Which actually says a lot about Brasilian football. Only six championships and that's the most? And what's so incredicle about three in a row? There are countless other leagues, where three in a row, while not being commonplace, are still not that rare. Q: How many has Rosenborg won in Norway in a row? A: Thirteen, between 1992-2004.

    But then again, Brasil is no Norway when it comes to football. Not only have A Seleção the only team to have played in every single World Cup, football is, to paraphrase Bill Shankly, "Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. To Brasilians, it is much, much more
    important than that.    " Brasilians say, that Englishmen invented the beautiful game, but Brasilians perfected it. Brasil is "o país do futebol" (The Land of Football).

    São Paulo FC today is not necessarily known for the beauty of their game. Under current coach, Muricy Ramalho, the team has found a defensively-minded style of play, which may sound un-Brasilian. However, Tricolor scored 66 goals this season (a feat they did previously in 2006), just one less than Flamengo, which scored the most in 2008 (in 2006 SPFC led the league with goals scored). Last year they were a bit more lacklustre with goal scoring ("only" 55), but then again, they let the opponent score mere 19, 20 less than the next best team (Fluminense).

    However, São Paulo plays with just three defenders, with two back-playing midfielders in front of them. What makes this style so effective, is undoutably the single most important player of the team, goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni.

    What makes him so special? Is it his lightning reflexes? Is it the perfect positioning? Is it the commitment to the team (He's played for SPFC since 1990, with 831 caps for the team!)? Or could it be his incredible skill with the ball?

    Why, I think it the combination of all of the above, with special emphasis on the last one. Rogerio Ceni plays almost like a libero. He is the 4th defender and unlike so many (still) goalies, he is REALLY good with his feet. How good, I hear you ask?

    He scored 20 goals in 2005 season. Ten goals alone in the league. THAT is a LOT. His career score? 83 goals. Eighty-three. Mindnumbing. Way more than any other goalie, ever.

    Penalties, you say? Yes, penalties. 36 of them. Which makes it 47 NOT from penalties. THAT (again) is a LOT.

    Thanks to Urheilukanava+, I've been able to watch Campeonato Brasileiro. The end of the season was a bit of a bummer personally, since I've been working a bit too much to have been able to enjoy the games (which are mainly televised here some time after midnight on Saturdays and Sundays) all that much. For a while it looked like Gremio was cruising to an easy title, but then they just… halted and crappy-beginning SPFC just cruised past them, not losing a single game of their last 18 (of the total number of 38 games).
