Jouluaatto. Aika hurjaa.
Aika hiljentää internetti tämän luukun myötä. Mutta jos innostun, niin ehkä vielä pyhien aikana kirjaan pari sanaa tästä projektista ja parista katsomasta audiovisuaalisesta viihdepläjäyksestä.
Nyt kun vielä ymmärtäisi, mikä ihme sai aikaan 16. ja 17.päivien aikaisen ryntäyksen blogiin. Yli 5000 käyntiä. Mikä lie.

Älä tuomitse kirjaa kannen perusteella. Näin sanottiin.
Vaan mikä on se peruste, jolla valitsemme lukemista? Onko se kirjailija, kuulopuhe, luettu/kuunneltu arvostelu, kiva kansikuva vai tekstinpätkä, joka vie mukanaan? Ehkä kaikkia näistä, jokaisella meistä on oma tapamme ja tyylimme lukea ja valita lukemisemme.
Tähän olisi kiva laittaa muutama mukava kansikuva, jotka ovat saaneet allekirjoittaneen tarttumaan kirjaan vakavalla lukutarkoituksella, mutta jostain syystä Typepadissa on vika, joka ei suo kuvallisen materiaalin liittämistä postaukseen. Enemmän kuin tylsää, ehkä aiheellista siirtää koko blogi pois täältä. Mitenhän moinen siirtäminen onnistuisi?

Tällä kertaa Tähtivaeltajapodcastin joulukalenterin luukusta pöllähtää esiin Helsingin kirjamessut ja sieltä löytynyt maaginen maailma kirjaostoksineen. Muistelemme hankintojamme ja minä ilahdun uudemman kerran Professori Anni Isotalon seikkailuiden neljännen osan, Vatikaanin vangin löytymisestä.
Mukaan mahtuu myös viime hetkellä muistettu Niksi-Praedor, joka jatkaa luukuttelua vielä toisen mokoman verran, kun palaamme muistelemaan Praedoria, josta aikaisemmassa podcast-jaksossa oli pidemmällä kaavalla puhetta. En muista Niksi-Praedorin tekijää, mutta se on tietenkin itsensä Titivillus Gorgonius, joka ei tietenkään ole mikään borvarialainen lisöösi vaan farrignialainen filoosi!
Itsenäisyyspäivän kunniaksi tein Helsingin sanomien suomalaisuustestin ja sain ensiksi kuulla olevani saksalainen ja hieman uudemman kerran vastauksia tarkentaen, irlantilainen. Molemmilla kerroilla molemmat mainitut sekä belgialaisuus oli myös olennainen osa henkilöitymääni. Kummallakaan kerralla ne "olennaisesti saksalaisuutta tai irlantilaisuutta" kuvaavat lyhyet luonnehdinnat eivät nyt minusta olleet erityisen osuvia. Olenko stereotypian uhri ja sivuosuman uhri?

The Drink is Anton’s Elixir: Jordgubbe och Lime. That is alcoholic version of the previous soft drink. And it is pretty nice, very much like a strawberry mixer of some sort. I like the soft drink even better, though. Jukka feels the same, it's a nice little alcomaholic beverage, but the soda is better.
Few years back when studios began to have their own streaming services, I remember thinking that that we obviously need to decide which services we want. Or game the system taking different services for a month or two and then cancel them. Yeah, right. We now have Netflix, Disney, Amazon Prime, Apple and HBO Max. Obviously we have too much money because we haven’t bothered with switching between them. It is not a long-term solution, though. All services have their flag-ship series, and things are only getting worse: STD (Star Trek Discovery) will be on Paramount’s own streaming service. It is all very annoying for a consumer.
At least we have lots to watch during the holidays. Also, a new TV to watch from. Our previous started to glitch and it had never worked properly as a smart TV so it was downgraded to a screen to be used at the cottage. The new one is teeny weeny bit bigger, and I do have to say that this 50” looks pretty huge in our large living room. It boggles the mind that 55” seems to be the “normal” size for a telly now. How big are people's rooms? So far some hassle to set it up, we’ll se how this inbuilt chromecast-thing works. So far my phone and TV don’t really talk to each other and neither does my iPad.
But at least we are now equipped to watch all the new stuff on our subscription services. And of course the obligatory Christmas time LoTR the extended cut marathon. With the extras.

You may have notivced by so eof my earlier notes, that I like ginger. And ginger beer, hence today, on my brthday, I'm drinking Hollows & Fentimans All Natural Alcoholic Ginger Beer.
And this is good. The nose is subtly gingery, sweet and juicy, not at all like ginger ale. The taste is semi-sweet, lovingly gingery and unlike any other ginger beer I've drank before. I did have a Ginger Joe earlie rtoday and while there is the similarity with ginger, Ginger Joe is a lot more sweeter, but also stronger. GJ is also a lot cheaper. And more meadier. I could imagine cider person, who likes ginger with alcohol, liking this one.
Since it is my birthday, I've been taking today very easy.
Taking it easy. Highly recommended. As is Continuum. Second season ending was quite an episode. Can't wait for season three! Good show, sir!

The pot is in the oven with all the necessary ingredients (various meats, roots, spices and then some) in it. Should be something smoky, tasty and stouty.
Desired stoutiness should come from a generous dollop of McGrath's Irish Black Stout, which according to the label at least, is recipe no. 4.
Roasted malt flavours heads to the nose, but isn't that strong on the palate. There's certain ashness to this, also coffee-like, but not like that bestest of all coffees, Coffee Porter. No sweet stout this and the richness comes after each following sips, stronger and stronger. This is one dry stout. Very nice indeed!
What could be more Irish and fantastical TV than… Moone Boy, but we covered that yesterday. So we'll have to do with Misfits, whose original main character was Irish Robert Sheehan. (*saved!*) I reckon everyone has either seen or heard of Misfits, so I don't have to go very deep into this. But in case there is still someone who hasn't seen this brilliant TV-series, go now and watch it!
This is what happens when juvenile delinquents get superpowers, good and bad stuff. Misfits is lewd, raunchy and occasionally very graphic, but it is at the same time excellently done, brilliantly written and singularily British, that I hope the American remake never materializes. (Then again, people in the know have said that Life on Mars and Being Human US-versions are good, I haven't dared to have a go yet.)
But there is a remake I'm really interested in, Freaks!, an ITALIAN version of Misfits, which ahs its own Youtube channel, where you can see what it is all about. Mainly in Italian. Oh, powers that be, could you possibly translate more of this and sell me a DVD? Puhleese? What's the use of living in this superhighwayinformationsociety, if we're still unable to get everything there is?

Jeepers! It's nearly Independence Day! How time flies.
Today was the St. Urho's Pub day, when the Helsinki-area SF-people meet for our so called mafias. There were schedules, so we stayed only for two hours, in which time I managed to sample two nice beers: Brew Dogs Santa Paws, which was indeed a very nice Scottish Ale, and Lump of Coal stout.
Santa Paws is made with heather honey, which I reckon is the reason this nice beer tastes a bit herbal? Dark and roasty, very xmasy, which was what I asked from the bartender. Smells better than tastes, though it does taste really good, caramelly dark and complex.
Lump of Coal is a very sweet and somewhat odd stout. I liked it, but it is not really that stouty, if I know what I say. More like a porter, perhaps? Good beer, will drink again.
I've been looking at some newer series lately, one of which is the new Karl Urban show, Almost Human. Were in the near future, but we have a number of scientifically advanced inventions, like robots. This is a bit like I, Robot meets Blade Runner (not really, but I'm drawing blank here, will have to think more appropriate comparison). Urban plays a cop, who has had a traumatic experience, losing his partner and leg on the job.
He is partnered with a robot, Dorian, who is apparently some kind of a model that has reliability issues, as it is a lot more human-like than the other police robots. Well acted by Michael Ealy, at the same time human, but robotty, almost human…
So far, four episodes have been shown on telly, but I've grown fond of the interplay between our main characters and there seems to be a decent understanding with the writing team where the show is going and what are the strengths of the show: strong characters and gritty scifi.

Tämä viime viikon "Sanoma-konsernin kummallinen kolumni" -palkinnon voittaja (edellisellä viikollahan himoitun tittelin voitti Jarkko Tontti) oli monessa mielessä erinomaisen heikko esitys. Se ei olisi ollut edes kovin kummoinen Facebook-päivitys, mutta kohtuullisen arvostetun organisaation lehden sivuilla tämä erottui "edukseen" lähinnä kehnolla argumentoinnilla ja vaisulla ironiallaan. Oletan siis, että ironiaa tässä kai nyt kuitenkin haettiin? Saman kirjoittajan aikaisemmat esitykset hieman vastaavilla argumenteilla: "Meillä ei enää lueskella. Kirjat ja kirjahyllyt on heitetty kodista pois, etteivät ne häiritsisi parin laatuaikaa. Lukeminen kun vie liikaa yhteisestä ajasta, ja toisaalta kirjahyllyt ja kirjat ovat rumia. Televisio on trendikkäämmän näköinen, tosin sieltäkin ne kirjailijan pahukset kurkistelevat. Elämä on niin paljon täydempää ja syvempää ilman kirjoja."
Suutuinko? No, suutuin ja en. Olin aluksi tuohtunut, koska kuvittelin tässä oltavan nyt liikkeellä ihan vakavissaan ja aina kun joku "yleisen kirjallisuustieteen maisteri" tulee kertomaan minulle, että scifin lukemisen ongelma ovat "oudonnimiset tyypit seikkailevat oudonnimisissä paikoissa, joita en tunne, koska niitä ei ole olemassa", alan saada happovaivoja. Ja kun se toinenkin ikävä lukuaihe on omakohtaisesti kohtuullisen läheinen historiallinen romaani, niin saatoin puskea hieman sappea. En tykkää, kun en ymmärrä. Tai siis olen laiska.
Kangasniemi antaa itsestään kolumneissaan kiusallisen tyhjäpäisen kuvan, mikä on aika sääli, mikäli kyseinen henkilö on tavallisesti luotettavien lähteiden mukaan fiksu ja mukava ihminen. Kun hänen nimellään kuukkeloi hieman, löytyy "Kymmenen kirjaa, jotka luen vielä uudelleen", joista osan olen jopa lukenut ja tykännyt itsekin. Ja joista muutama ei mahdu millään tuon hänen viime viikon kolumnin ahtaisiin määritelmiin. Siis ironiaa(?).
Avaan hieman omaa lukuprofiiliani. Se on nykyään aivan liian kapea. Olen aikaisemmin kokenut olevani kohtuullisen monialaisesti lukeva ihminen, mutta viime vuosina olen huomannut, että lukulistaltani löytyy kohtuullisen vähän suosikkigenrejeni ulkopuolista tavaraa so. fantasia, sf ja historialliset romaanit (tähän sisältyy myös periodidekkarit jne). Ennen luin paljon enemmän esim. Keltaista kirjastoa, perinteisiä klassikoita ja jännäreitä.
Onhan se surullista. Runoja en ole koskaan ymmärtänyt, joten eipä tule luettua. Kotimainen proosa on myös harvemmin trampattu baana, sen verta raskaita olivat äidinkielen tuntien pakkoluennat. Jossain välissä katselin myös hieman peljäten lukemieni kirjailijoiden sukupuolijakautumaa, mutta sen suhteen olen useimmiten ollut aika hyvässä jamassa, sillä luen aika sujuvasti niin naisten kuin miestenkin kirjoittamia kirjoja.
Tämän vuoden lukuteema on joka tapauksessa lukea yhtä monta nais- ja mieskirjailijan teosta. Ehkä tässä pitäisi myös hieman laajentaa sitä shaanreskaalaa, menetiedä.

I have an LJ account which I use solely for commenting purposes, never felt the need to split my net presence to different blogs. And yet, I went and got myself a Dreamwidth account which I plan to upgrade to paid account. Here is why:
1) Dreamwidth's busines model is ad-free; their only clients are the users. As I have stated earlier one of my pet peeves about web 2.0 is the unsolvable dilemma of trying to please two different clienteles: users and advertisers, so I really, really want to see if Denise and Mark have managed to create a viable business.
2) The software is LJ fork, but they have done quite a lot of neat things with the site I like better than LJ. The most important is that friending has been separated into reading list and give access to features. It gets rid of the unnecessary baggage the term "friend" has on LJ and is just a much better way to manage access to content.
3)I give you Infotropism on Ada Lovelace day. I just think this is cool and important and worth supporting.
4) Totally shallow reason: I got my proper name as my username: I am Sari over there. That is somewhat neat.
I don't quite now how I will use the account, propably I will post less structured more journally type entries there and use muffins for reviews, and more structured arguments. It will be interesting to see weather LJ-type platform is really more communal than more traditional blogging platforms like typepad.
Oh, and I have one invite left if anyone wants it, first comment, first served.

Books from Finland is now a webzine, which I think is actually pretty smart move. I think they might reach more readers this way than with the old rather stuffy-looking paper version. The site itself is reasonably clean and I give special props for using tags.
Appropriately, there are few essays about Internet in the zine. I think Jyrki Lehtola is a bit late in discovering that there are flamewars on teh interwebs, I really don't think social networking tools bring anything new to the equation. Others do better, though. I especially liked this article about internet, reading, google books and – OMG – singularity by Leena Krohn.
