This is the latest concert/documentary of the band I consider to being one of the best music acts of the 1980’s-90’s. Still going, albeit a duo, after losing an original member after the first taste of “success” (first album), the replacement after their MAJOR opus (Songs of Faith and Devotion), and then finally, the death of the original member just prior to their latest (last?) album.
It’s… good. Not great, not bad. Could be better, could be more… interesting.
I quite like the opening, the way it talks about death, the band, their position in Mexico, playing songs from Memento Mori and being a right old couple of geezers doing panto. And then some oldies and goldies, but as the documentary unfolds, it unravels and loses interest. The new songs, not just rom MM, but the lesser songs after the departure of Alan Wilder (crazy name, crazy guy!). Those songs feel appropriate for the duo du jour, but it’s not the Band people want. And what we, as watching this film are getting.
This is a collage of three nights in Mexico City, missing a fair bit of the Big hits they did play then, but are omitted from this one. After a while, it gets… a bit uninteresting, while being “fine”, until it finds a bit of oompf in the end and gets back to good, but not great.
But yeah, I liked it.
